Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet

Milan, Italy

In the context of Expo Milano 2015, the European Commission is pleased to invite you to the international conference "Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet".

The conference will take place on 15 October 2015 at the Expo Conference Centre, in Milan.

"Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet" aims to contribute to the setting of EU and global directions for food waste prevention, focusing in particular on the importance of effective inter-sector co-operationfrom farm to fork. The conference will gather EU and international policy makers as well as all stakeholders involved in the food chain – from industry to non-governmental organizations, the scientific community and consumers – in order to share achievements to date and foster an open and action-oriented debate.

Food – a precious resource

About a third of all food produced globally for human consumption is lost or wasted – around 1.3 billion tonnes per year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation. In the EU it is estimated that nearly 100 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the EU. If nothing is done, food waste could rise to over 120 million tonnes by 2020.

Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. All actors in the food chain have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste whilst ensuring food safety from farm to fork.

An interactive conference

The conference will seek to promote an integrated approach to food waste prevention and reduction involving all actors concerned. During the conference, interventions will be followed by an interactive panel session and a voting system will facilitate audience participation.

Come to Milan to join in the debate on 15 October! Further details regarding the conference programme and the registration site will be available in the coming weeks.
