Centre for Process Innovation Limited

The Centre for Process Innovation Limited (CPI) is a UK-based SME technology development centre and part of the UK governments High Value Manufacturing Catapult, providing facilities and services to companies wanting to develop new products and processes on an open access, low risk basis. Currently located at two sites in North East England, the Wilton site is situated within the largest integrated chemical manufacturing site in Europe and home to the National Industrial Biotechnology Facility (NIBF), Anaerobic Digestion Development Centre, Smart Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering.

At Sedgefield the Printable Electronics Centre focusing on design, development and prototyping for the emerging printable electronics industry. CPI has been selected by the UK government as the home of a new National Biologics Manufacturing Centre (NBMC) based at Darlington also in North East England. This centre will assist UK companies to develop a competitive foothold in the growing biologics market.

cAMBRIDGE nANOSYSTEMS

Cambridge Nanosystems (CNS) is a young company born out of the University of Cambridge in 2012. CNS specializes in volume production of ultra-high-quality, impurity-free graphene. This is achieved through a one-step production process involving cracking of abundant greenhouse gases, such as bio/natural gas and carbon dioxide. Advanced plasma chemistry means there is no need for any additive, metal catalyst, or lengthy purification stage.

CNS has seen tremendous growth since inception, where the number of employees has nearly doubled in the past year. The experienced team is dedicated not only to the refinement and scaling up of graphene production, but also the development of applications for this 21st century material. CNS recently moved into their new premises, where 2500m2 of floor space is dedicated to the production of graphene and R&D.

CNRSCentre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS

The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Centre for Scientific Research) CNRS is a French Government funded research organisation, under the administrative authority of France's Ministry of Research. It was founded in 1939 by governmental decree and one of its missions is to evaluate and carry out all research capable of advancing knowledge and bringing social, cultural, and economic benefits to society.

CNRS is Europe's largest research organisation and the largest participant in FP7 projects. Founded in 1963, the Paul Pascal Research Centre (CRPP) is a Research unit within CNRS. It is widely recognized for development and characterization of complex systems. The Nanotube and Graphene team of CRPP is composed of six permanent researchers and university professors and about fifteen PhD students and post-docs. The team's interests focus on carbon including chemistry and physical chemistry of nanotubes and graphenes.

Fraunhofer

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

The Institute for Building Physics (IBP) is one of the Fraunhofer (FhG) Institutes. The Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) department started in 1989; their research engineers have accumulated over 200 man-years of outstanding experience in developing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, software (GaBi) and databases (eco-profiles).The FhG-IBP is world-recognized in the field of life cycle studies. Its services comprise Life Cycle Engineering - including LCA, Life Cycle Costing (LCC), Life Cycle Working Environment (LCWE) - Design for Environment (DfE), Energy Efficiency benchmarks and Material Flow Analysis (MFA).

Moreover, IBP’s LCE department has an active role in several SETAC working groups, and is represented in the international UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative for fostering LCA capability, harmonization and database-access worldwide. IBP’s LCE department develops and applies their methods in co-operations with industrial clients as well as governmental institutions on (inter-) national level. In precise projects life cycle related questions are associated with main issues of technical feasibility, capacities infrastructures and substance flow management.

GAPGAP Waste Management

GAP Waste Management, was established in 2005 specialising in the collection and processing of electrical waste prior to the introduction of the EC WEEE Directive. The company has grown significantly over the past eight years employing over 35 staff and progressively seeks to address the valorisation of other waste streams with high potential value returns. As a result GAP continues to work in sectors where it has been considered that valorisation routes require further development, keeping it on the forward edge of new opportunities. This includes the development of new energy from waste technologies, it has been identified by GAP that these new waste to energy approaches (including AD) can be further extended in the development of secondary materials in addition to renewable energy generation.

The diversion of food waste from landfill has been identified at national and European levels as a major contributing factor to methane reduction levels. GAP is well placed to valorise this waste stream and at the same time drive innovation in the AD sector.

AbalonyxAbalonyx AS

Abalonyx is a Norwegian SME established in 2005 as a private corporation, engaged in R&D related to graphene and graphene derivatives for functional nano-composites, nano-laminates and coatings. The corporate strategy is to build a key technology IP portfolio for future licensing and production. Our technology basis is both in materials and methods. On the materials side we are specialized in the synthesis and surface functionalization of inorganic nano-particles, specifically graphene, and derivatives of graphene, which we have been working on since 2008. On the methods side we have developed and use automated, high through put methods based on the standard well plate format.

Our discoveries have included highly conductive materials which we are taking to market with commercial partners. We seek to employ parallelization and automation in all aspects of experimental work, in order to secure quality and reproducibility. Abalonyx has a core in-house team of technical experts, who undertake both basic analysis and characterization using techniques including XRD, SEM and electrical properties.
